Water Treatment For Medical & Healthcare
Case Study
Pure Water Systems Supporting Patient Care and Sterile Manufacturing
Rotek’s mission is to reduce all contaminants in the raw water to levels that meet the standards of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI).
CRITICAL CONTAMINANTS WE ELIMINATE
To ensure absolute patient safety and product sterility, ROTEK’s medical-grade purification systems are engineered to target and eliminate three major categories of water contaminants:
-
1. Particulate Matter & Colloids
-
Includes: Clay, sand, oxidized iron, and silica.
-
The Hazard: Clogs sub-micron filters and compromises cleanroom packaging sterility.
-
-
2. Dissolved Chemicals & Inorganic Ions
-
What they are: Dissolved inorganic salts and heavy metals (such as Na+, Cl-, Al3+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fluoride), as well as organic toxins like pesticides, industrial chemicals, and oils.
-
The Hazard: Threatens patient safety in dialysis and causes scale buildup in manufacturing.
-
-
3. Microorganisms & Endotoxins / Pyrogens
-
Includes: Bacteria, viruses, and bacterial endotoxins (pyrogens).
-
The Hazard: Triggers life-threatening pyrogenic shock in clinical care and ruins cleanroom hygiene.

Case Study 1: Ulta-pure Water System for Hemodialysis Center
Project Overview
Patient safety in hemodialysis centers depends directly on water quality. Because dialysis patients are exposed to huge volumes of water weekly, any trace chemical or bacterial contamination can be life-threatening. Water consumption for each dialysis bed is calculated at approximately 50 liters per hour (50 L/h).
To support a busy hemodialysis unit, ROTEK engineered a medical-grade double-pass reverse osmosis (Double-Pass RO) system. This configuration guarantees a stable, continuous supply of ultra-pure, endotoxin-free water that meets the stringent international AAMI/ISO dialysis water standards.
Performance & Results
-
Absolute Bio-Safety & Endotoxin Control
The double-pass RO membrane barrier, paired with integrated UV disinfection, ensures the complete removal of bacteria, endotoxins, and dissolved micro-contaminants.
-
Precision Water Flow Management
The system dynamically manages water distribution to meet the exact 50 L/h demand per bed, maintaining optimal line pressure across all dialysis stations simultaneously.
-
Continuous 24/7 Monitoring & Disinfection
Features integrated conductivity alarms and automated chemical-free sanitization loops, providing dialysis technicians with total peace of mind and simplified daily operations.
Case Study 2:
High-Purity Water System for Mask Manufacturing
Project Overview
Medical-grade mask manufacturing requires strict environmental controls to prevent contamination of the delicate meltblown filtration layers. Water is used in the raw material processing, dust-suppression in cleanrooms, and equipment maintenance. The presence of minerals, hardness, or bacteria in the water can degrade the mask's electrostatic charge, compromising its filtration efficiency (BFE/PFE).
ROTEK installed a highly reliable, high-flow commercial RO water system to feed the production line. By delivering pure, scale-free, and sterilized water, our system ensures the mask manufacturer maintains peak product quality and strict hygienic standards.
Performance & Results
-
Protection of Sensitive Meltblown Fabrics
With over 98% salt and mineral rejection, the RO permeate prevents mineral crystallization on critical manufacturing equipment and materials, protecting the electrostatic filtration capabilities of the masks.
-
Humidification and Cleanroom Hygiene
Supplies pure, mineral-free water to cleanroom humidifiers. This eliminates the risk of "white dust" (calcium deposits) settling on products and prevents microbial growth in the air.
-
Uninterrupted Production Lines
ROTEK's robust, easy-to-operate RO system operates with minimal maintenance downtime, keeping high-volume mask production running seamlessly to meet urgent global healthcare demands.
